Seo Yu-ri Exits Controversial Excel Broadcast Amid Growing Criticism
Korean voice actress and media personality Seo Yu-ri has formally announced her departure from the controversial online program referred to as the “Excel Broadcast,” known for its provocative content and competitive tipping system. The decision was made following weeks of public debate over the nature of the show, which aired on SOOP (formerly AfreecaTV).
On March 20, Seo Yu-ri shared a message on her Instagram, stating, “It was ultimately my decision to step down from the Excel Broadcast. I believe further discussion might lead to unnecessary harm to others, so I want to put an end to it here.”
The Excel Broadcast format drew sharp criticism due to its controversial approach where competing BJs (Broadcast Jockeys) received virtual gifts—called ‘Star Balloons’—based on viewer votes recorded in a real-time Excel sheet. The format incited concern for its perceived objectification and the race to garner monetary support through stimulating performances.
Seo Yu-ri had first appeared on the broadcast on February 27 and quickly gained attention after receiving a large volume of Star Balloons, an event that moved her to tears during the live session. While some fans applauded her for her performance, others raised concerns over the platform and the implications of her participation.
In response to the growing backlash, Seo Yu-ri announced that she would be parting ways with the show and reassured her followers by adding, “People will always interpret things in their own way. But I won’t be hurt, so please don’t worry about me.”
She also hinted at pursuing new opportunities in different formats, suggesting that her career trajectory may shift away from controversial online performances in the future.
Seo’s exit marks another example of the ongoing debate surrounding content ethics in Korea’s rapidly evolving livestreaming culture, especially as former traditional entertainers cross over into online platforms.
