Korean Crime Thriller ‘The Opposition Party’ Dominates Box Office for Second Weekend

The Korean crime thriller ‘The Opposition Party’ (Yadang) is proving to be a formidable box office force, holding the top spot for the second consecutive weekend. According to the Korean Film Council, the film attracted 74,459 viewers on June 24 alone, pushing its cumulative audience past 1.15 million since its release on June 16.

The film’s momentum suggests it will surpass 1.5 million total admissions by the end of this weekend. As of 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, it leads all newly released films in advance ticket sales with over 82,800 reservations.

‘The Opposition Party’ dives deep into Korea’s underground drug world, following the entangled narratives of a ruthless prosecutor, a cunning broker, and a hardline narcotics detective. The story centers around Lee Kang-soo, a broker nicknamed ‘opposition party’ who sells drug trade information to law enforcement, a prosecutor named Gu Kwan-hee obsessed with climbing the power ladder, and Oh Sang-jae, the narcotics division team leader relentlessly pursuing justice.

The film boasts a stellar cast led by Hae-jin Yoo as Prosecutor Gu Kwan-hee, Kang Ha-neul as the broker Lee Kang-soo, and Park Hae-joon as Detective Oh Sang-jae. Underpinning powerful performances and a gritty narrative, The Opposition Party taps into the ongoing trend in cinematic storytelling that exposes the shadowy nexus of crime, justice, and ambition in modern South Korea.
