The Enigmatic Characters of Kim Da-mi

Actress Kim Da-mi has carved a niche for herself in the entertainment industry by portraying unique, larger-than-life characters that captivate audiences. From her role as ‘Koo Ja-yoon’ in the film The Witch to ‘Jo Yi-seo’ in JTBC’s drama Itaewon Class, Kim consistently chooses roles that are seemingly plucked from the pages of a comic book.

Recent Endeavors

Kim Da-mi’s latest project with Disney+ Original Series Nine Puzzles is no exception. Her character, ‘Yoon Ine Na’, a profiler at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, possesses a combination of sharp instincts akin to a detective while projecting childlike behaviors and mannerisms.

In an interview following the conclusion of Nine Puzzles, Kim shared, “Yoon Ine Na was the most character-driven role I’ve taken on so far. I pre-planned the rhythm and pace of the dialogue, along with gestures to truly embody the character.”

Crafting the Character

To bring Yoon Ine Na to life, Kim focused intensely on her outward appearance. Ties, headphones, and slightly tousled hair were added gradually to provide a distinctive flair. Kim recounted how the director envisioned a more comic-like backdrop, allowing her to add red nails and earrings to her ensemble.

The Challenge of Believability

Despite her evident enthusiasm, Kim Da-mi admitted experiencing challenges in presenting such a fantastical character in a convincing manner. “I pondered over whether viewers could relate to the character suspended between reality and fantasy. As the plot progresses, I believe the audience will become immersed in this unique world,” Kim explained.

Collaborations and Chemistry

One of the highlights of the series is the chemistry between Kim Da-mi and actor Son Seok-gu. The dynamic between Yoon Ine Na and ‘Kim Han-sam’, initially involving suspicion and gradually evolving into trust, adds a captivating layer to the narrative.

Kim noted, “It was essential for us to delve deeply into the emotional journey between our characters exploring how Kim Han-sam comes to accept and support Yoon Ine Na.” The natural, playful interactions between the two characters evoke a light-hearted charm that resonates with viewers.

Future Ventures and Reflections

Having left a notable mark in The Witch and Itaewon Class, Kim Da-mi continues to impress with her evolving filmography. Upcoming projects include a Netflix film The Great Flood and the JTBC drama One Hundred Memories.

Reflecting on her growth as an actress, Kim shared, “While my introverted nature sometimes limits how much I share, I hope viewers can appreciate the emotion and reality I strive to convey through my characters. With my appearance considered everyday, I feel it gives me an edge in portraying relatable characters.”

Behind the Scenes

Not known for her presence on variety shows or YouTube, Kim recently offered fans a glimpse of her life through a vlog on her agency’s YouTube channel. “With project delays, I wanted to give back to my supporters, so I proposed and planned this vlog as a gift,” Kim confessed.

While hesitant at first about releasing the vlog, Kim humorously added, “Editing worked wonders, making the final cut both engaging and insightful.”

Kim Da-mi continues to pave her path in the industry with a blend of distinctive choice and nuanced performances that leaves audiences both enchanted and eager for more.
