K-Fantasy Series ‘The Ghost’s Palace’ Stirs Global Buzz Across Asia

The Ghost’s Palace starring Yook Sungjae and Kim Jiyeon dominates Viu charts and media reviews

‘The Ghost’s Palace’ (Korean title: 귀궁), a supernatural mystery from Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS), is swiftly becoming a global sensation in Asia. According to the weekly chart released by Viu, Asia’s largest cross-regional OTT platform, for the week of April 28 to May 4, the drama ranked No. 2 in Hong Kong and Thailand, No. 3 in Indonesia, and No. 4 in both Singapore and Malaysia — achieving Top 4 presence across five major Asian countries.

Starring K-pop idols-turned-actors Yook Sung-jae of BtoB and Kim Ji-yeon of WJSN, alongside Kim Ji-hoon, the drama’s casting is believed to be one of the key contributors to its overseas success. With their established fanbases across Asia, these stars are amplifying the show’s appeal. Especially notable is Kim Ji-yeon’s back-to-back success following her performance in Viu’s previously released hit ‘Pyramid Game.’

The show is being met with acclaim not just from fans but also from international media. Journalist Pierce Conran of the South China Morning Post commended the series for its ‘seamless blend of genres and intricately woven plotlines that create a dense, cohesive storyworld.’ He added, ‘With shamans, mythological creatures like the Imoogi, and other spirits interwoven into its narrative, The Ghost’s Palace maintains a thrilling yet visually captivating atmosphere without becoming overwhelmingly frightening.’

Leisure Byte also praised the show, noting, ‘It manages to balance humor and heart through the whimsical chemistry between a thousand-year-old Imoogi and a young shaman. Even amidst the chaos of body swapping and haunted palace dynamics, it delivers pure entertainment.’

The plot revolves around Yeori (Kim Ji-yeon), a shaman who rejects her destined path, and Kang Cheol (Yook Sung-jae), an Imoogi inhabiting the body of Yeori’s first love, Yoon Gak. Together, they confront the vengeful spirit Palcheok-Gwi, who threatens the royal court. With its unique blend of fantasy romance, court intrigue, and traditional Korean ghost lore, ‘The Ghost’s Palace’ is setting a new standard in K-drama storytelling.
