AKMU’s Lee Chan-hyuk Makes Film Music Director Debut with ‘Midnight Sun’
Lee Chan-hyuk, one half of the celebrated K-pop sibling duo AKMU, is stepping into a new role as a film music director for the first time in his career. He will be leading the soundtrack production for the upcoming music romance film ‘Midnight Sun’.
‘Midnight Sun’ tells the moving story of Misol and Minjun, played by Jeong Ji-so and Cha Hak-yeon respectively, who can only meet after dark. Through music, the two fall in love and strive to make their dreams come true. The project blends emotional storytelling with the power of music in a unique nighttime setting.
Debuting in 2014, Lee Chan-hyuk has made his mark as both a composer and lyricist for AKMU’s chart-topping hits like “How Can I Love the Heartbreak, You’re the One I Love,” “Love Lee,” “Fried Egg’s Dream,” and “Last Goodbye.” He has also received recognition from prestigious award shows such as the Golden Disc Awards and Korean Music Awards.
Now, as music director for ‘Midnight Sun’, he brings his distinctive musical identity to the film, weaving it seamlessly into characters and scenes to boost emotional immersion. Lee shared, “It was a meaningful and exciting experience to challenge myself in this new field. I hope many people will love it.”
He wrote and composed four songs for the film, including the main theme “Fragment Star,” as well as “Yellow Day,” “Every Time Like This,” and “To Love.” These tracks reflect the inner musical world of Misol, an aspiring singer-songwriter in the film. Both lead actors contribute vocals to the soundtrack, elevating the authenticity and emotional depth of the OST.
“Lee Chan-hyuk directed with such precision, guiding us even with the basics of singing,” said Jeong Ji-so and Cha Hak-yeon. “Thanks to him, we were able to handle even the more challenging songs.”
Director Jo Young-jun also praised Lee’s contributions: “Lee Chan-hyuk has an extraordinary ability to interpret scripts. He knew exactly what lyrics should go where.” His insight and instinct have heightened anticipation for the film’s music.
The ‘Midnight Sun’ OST, fully produced by Lee Chan-hyuk, not only adds emotional gravitas to the narrative but delivers a rich auditory experience—especially in theaters, where the music is expected to elevate the overall cinematic journey.
