K-drama ‘Gwigung’ Star Kim Ji-yeon Transforms into a Shaman with Uncanny Realism

Behind the scenes Kim Ji yeon stuns as mystical shaman in fantasy Kdrama Gwigung

Rising actress Kim Ji-yeon captivates viewers with her immersive transformation into a powerful shaman in the SBS Fri-Sat Drama Gwigung. On June 3rd, her agency, King Kong by Starship, released behind-the-scenes photos from the filming set, showcasing Kim’s portrayal of Yeori — the sole granddaughter of a renowned medium and a skilled ceremonial glasses maker.

In the newly released shots, Kim Ji-yeon radiates a serene and compelling presence. Her angelic appearance and composed styling emphasize the sacred nature of the shamanic ritual she performs in the storyline, particularly during a dramatic scene where Yeori accepts Kang Chul-yi (played by Yook Sung-jae) as her spiritual host. Another photo captures the actress with fierce determination in her eyes as she prepares to confront the mythical antagonist, Palcheok-gwi.

Kim Ji-yeon’s dedication to authenticity shines through—she studied traditional chants and rituals under professional guidance and continuously sought advice during filming to achieve realistic choreography and movement. Her impeccable sync with the character Yeori adds a fresh and compelling element to the fantasy genre.

In her role, Yeori initially struggles with her fate as a born medium but gradually grows into her calling. By resolving the grudges of vengeful spirits and courageously battling dark forces, Yeori emerges as both empathetic and powerful — characteristics that have quickly won over the audience.

As Yeori prepares for a pivotal showdown within the mystical palace, anticipation builds over how her story will unfold in the coming episodes of Gwigung. Featuring performances by Kim Ji-yeon, Yook Sung-jae, and Kim Ji-hoon, Episode 6 of Gwigung is scheduled to air tonight at 9:55 PM KST on SBS.
