Korea’s ‘Trot Queen’ Jang Yoon-jeong Joins ‘Mr. Trot Japan’ as Master Judge

TV Chosun’s internationally successful audition format Mr. Trot has arrived in Japan with a star-studded lineup and upgraded competition. On May 26th at 5:20 PM (KST), Mr. Trot Japan will air its highly anticipated first team mission round, featuring newly appointed judges and emotional performances that promise to capture hearts across borders.

One of Korea’s most beloved trot singers, Jang Yoon-jeong, known as the ‘Trot Queen,’ makes her impactful debut as a master judge. Her addition to the panel generated significant excitement among Japanese contestants, who cheered enthusiastically upon her introduction. The show is an adaptation of Korea’s Mr. Trot and premiered on February 19th in Japan, immediately dominating local video streaming platforms and garnering massive attention for its heartfelt storytelling and dynamic talent lineup.

Joining Jang Yoon-jeong are other notable figures including Crystal Kay, a prominent biracial artist, and model-entertainer Yuchami. Former Produce 101 contestant and Japanese idol Urano Shuta also steps into the role of sub-MC, signaling the show’s multicultural and multigenerational appeal.

Among the standout stories is the ‘Daddy Team’ — composed of predominantly 36-year-old men with little dance experience. Struggling to synchronize their moves due to daily life commitments and geographic distance, they relied on choreography videos recorded by their wives and sent daily via messaging apps — amassing over 100 videos in a month. Their effort not only improved stage performance but deepened bonds within their families. Moved by their passion, Jang Yoon-jeong noted, “It felt like the stage of grown men, it was very touching. One person’s voice stood out so clearly, I rooted for them with all my heart.”

The show also features the vibrant ‘Teenage Team,’ composed of 10-somethings from the previously all-heart receiving ‘Student Team.’ Their tear-jerking performance left judge Sonin in tears. When host Goto Terumoto inquired, she admitted, “I didn’t want to drop any of them. It’s the most I’ve cried recently out of deep emotion.”

The drama, passion, and raw talent continue to unfold weekly on Mr. Trot Japan, offering a rare blend of cultural exchange, emotional depth, and toe-tapping performances, sure to resonate with fans of international music competitions.
