South Korean singer Hong Ji-yoon, widely known as the ‘Trot Barbie’, showcased her versatile charm and vocal prowess on the latest episode of KBS 1TV‘s Gugak Hanmadang (traditional Korean music festival), aired on June 3.

Closing the show, Hong Ji-yoon performed a powerful trio of songs—Aesu-ui Gaeulbam (‘Melancholy Autumn Night’), Garirang, and Bae Ttwieora (‘Set Sail’). Her ability to seamlessly transition between traditional sounds and modern trot captivated the audience, reaffirming her status as a genre-blending artist.

Dressed in a stage costume reminiscent of a saekdong jeogori (color-striped traditional Korean top), Hong brought vibrancy to the stage while symbolizing the harmony between Korea’s past and present. With her doll-like visuals, the ‘Trot Barbie’ image was in full glory—delicate yet commanding.

Her performance of Aesu-ui Gaeulbam was especially emotional, where her poignant vocal tone conveyed deep longing and emotional depth, leaving the audience breathless. The track allowed her artistic sensitivity and unique vocal color to shine fully.

Following was Garirang, a dynamic fusion of traditional Korean gugak melodies and contemporary trot rhythms. Hong’s fresh experimentation with sound and her energetic stage presence added a vibrant twist, heating up the atmosphere.

The final act, Bae Ttwieora, saw her unleash her powerful vocals and radiant performance energy—perfectly embodying the spirit of crossover music. She concluded the set on a high note, illustrating her wide-ranging musical talent.

Meanwhile, Hong Ji-yoon recently appeared alongside veteran trot singer Kim Yeon-ja on Japan’s revered Enka television show 人生, 歌がある (‘Jinsei, Uta ga Aru’), solidifying her growing presence in the Japanese market as the next-generation K-Trot superstar.

She is also actively engaging with fans through various media, including appearing on KBS 2TV‘s popular food-variety program Shinsang Chulsi Paen Seutorang (‘New Release Pyeon-staurant’).
