SM Entertainment Makes Strategic Investment in Rising K-Pop Label Behind 82Major

SM Entertainment acquires stake in Great M Entertainment home to rising Kpop stars 82Major

SM Entertainment is making bold moves in its multi-label expansion strategy, commonly referred to as “SM 3.0.” In a recent announcement, the K-pop giant confirmed it has acquired shares in Great M Entertainment, becoming the company’s second-largest shareholder.

Great M Entertainment is the label behind the rapidly rising boy group 82Major, which made waves in the K-pop scene with the breakout track “Tongue Tip” in late 2023. Their latest release, “What Are You Looking At?,” continues to push them into top-tier status among fifth-generation K-pop idols.

SM’s decision marks the first external label partnership under its SM 3.0 system—an innovation emphasizing independent, autonomous IP production by multiple production centers and sub-labels. Until now, SM has successfully operated this horizontal structure with core groups like NCT, aespa, and RIIZE.

82Major is a six-member boy group officially debuted in October 2023 under Great M Entertainment. The label was founded in 2020 by Kim Young-seon, a former producer at FNC Entertainment. Industry experts see this partnership as potentially game-changing, with many wondering whether SM’s talent-scouting instincts will prove accurate once again.

This move could set a precedent for how major entertainment companies strategically invest in and elevate emerging talent in the ever-evolving K-pop landscape.
