SBS Fantasy Rom-Com ‘The Matchmakers’ Surges to Global OTT Top Rankings
South Korea’s hit SBS Friday-Saturday Drama ‘The Matchmakers’ continues to ride a wave of popularity both domestically and abroad, blending fantasy, mystery, and romance into a unique palace-themed rom-com.
Following its record-breaking domestic viewership every weekend, ‘The Matchmakers’ is now sweeping global OTT platforms. The story follows Yeori, a shaman who refuses the fate of a spiritual medium, and Kang Chul, an ancient serpent spirit trapped in the body of her first love, Yoon Gap. As they confront the supernatural entity Palcheokgui, the physical and spiritual entanglements between the two main characters unfold in a whirlwind of suspense, romance, and mystical folklore.
Internationally, the series made a strong debut – topping the TV series charts on Netflix South Korea, as well as streaming platforms in Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.
Additional global successes include ranking No.1 in the Asian genre on Japanese OTT platform Lemino (operated by NTT Docomo), No.1 in overall drama on Taiwan’s Hami Video, and at the top position on Vietnamese platform VieON.
Moreover, on Rakuten Viki, a major international platform, the series reached No.1 in viewer popularity during its first week of broadcast in 89 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Australia.
Anticipation is building even more with the release of new stills ahead of Episode 5, showing an intimate scene between Kang Chul and Yeori. In the teaser images, the pair are seen inside a tiny palanquin, creating a cozy, tension-filled atmosphere. Kang Chul gazes at Yeori with affection while reaching toward her lips—his eyes full of longing. Their close proximity and subtle touch heighten the romantic intensity for viewers.
SBS continues its golden streak with another fantasy period drama success. For fans eagerly awaiting what’s next, Episode 5 of ‘The Matchmakers’ will air on SBS this Saturday at 9:55 p.m. KST.
