Rookie K-pop Group NCT WISH Faces Criticism for Passive Attitude During Live Radio Show
NCT WISH, the latest addition to SM Entertainment’s expansive NCT universe, is under fire following a recent appearance on SBS Power FM’s ‘Cultwo Show’. The show, aired on the 22nd, featured CHUU and the rookie group as special guests. While CHUU brought her signature upbeat and energetic charm, the members of NCT WISH displayed a noticeably passive demeanor, prompting concern and debate among fans and fellow broadcast participants.
The episode was simultaneously broadcast on video, allowing real-time fan reactions to pour in. CHUU, returning with her third mini-album ‘Only Cry in the Rain’, engaged playfully with the DJs in a fast-paced, interactive rhythm that has become the hallmark of the show. In contrast, NCT WISH, currently promoting their second mini-album ‘POPPOP’, gave short answers and appeared hesitant, lacking the dynamism typically expected from K-pop idols on live broadcasts.
Hosts Kim Tae-gyun and Hanhae attempted to bridge the gap, encouraging the group’s engagement. Kim urged, “Someone please grab the mic quickly,” and added, “Thank you for participating despite your challenges.” Hanhae added some levity, saying, “We don’t bite.” Meanwhile, fellow SM Entertainment artist and SHINee member Key, tuned in live, sent a pointed message: “Tell the kids they better do well—this is live radio.”
Fan interactions on the live text stream reflected their unease, with messages like “WISH looks like they’re about to cry” and “Come on students, take the mic!” flooding in. After the broadcast, various Korean online communities criticized the group’s “uncomfortable” presence and applauded the hosts for “carrying the show.”
Some fans defended the group, explaining that NCT WISH, composed largely of Japanese members, may be facing a language barrier or may simply be nervous due to their recent debut in 2023. However, critics pointed out that signs of disengagement had been seen in previous appearances, arguing that SM Entertainment should be more proactive in media training and presence management for the group.
NCT WISH is part of SM’s grand concept of “infinite expansion,” and represents the final subgroup under the NCT brand, debuting in 2023 with a strong fanbase in Japan. Their second album ‘POPPOP’ achieved significant commercial success, surpassing 1.21 million pre-orders. Touted for their youthful charm and Gen Z appeal, their current controversy has sparked questions about the pressures placed on rookie idols—and how they’re being groomed for the spotlight.
