Park Chan-wook Calls for True Leadership Through Powerful Wartime Narrative at the Baeksang Arts Awards
At the 61st Baeksang Arts Awards held at COEX D Hall in Seoul on May 5, director Park Chan-wook and writer Shin Chul received the Best Screenplay award for their Netflix film ‘War and Revolt’. The film, which is internationally titled ‘War and Revolt’, is based on the Japanese Invasions of Korea and tells the story of Jongryeo (played by Park Jung-min), the son of Joseon’s most prestigious military family, and his servant Cheonyoung (played by Kang Dong-won), who find themselves on opposite sides during a turbulent era marked by war and rebellion under King Seonjo‘s rule.
Accepting his award, Director Park reflected, “‘War and Revolt’ takes place during the chaotic period following the Japanese invasions, a time when multiple uprisings and unrest continued long after the war. I found myself thinking about our film often when watching the current political climate in Korea.”
He continued by drawing a powerful comparison: “There are strong parallels between the past and now—brave and wise citizens saving a nation in distress. We are at a crossroads where we must choose a leader fitting of such a great people. It is time to elect someone who truly respects and fears the people, not someone like the tyrant King Seonjo portrayed by Cha Seung-won.”
Screenwriter Shin Chul voiced deep gratitude in his remarks, stating that it took him 12 years from the first sentence to the finished script. “This nation once had a ruler who gathered captured Japanese soldiers to create an army aimed at turning on his own people. I only came to know his story through the bravery of an unknown historian who spoke for the common people, not the powerful,” he said.
“That courage inspired me—spanning 400 years to reach my heart. It gave me the strength to finish this project. I dedicate today’s honor to that enduring spirit,” Shin concluded.
‘War and Revolt’ offers a timely reflection on leadership, resistance, and national identity—reminding us of the importance of historical memory in shaping today’s choices, both political and personal.
