Olympic Champion Junho Kim Reinvents Fencing on Korean TV

Junho Kim, an Olympic gold medalist and current coach for Hwaseong City Hall, is set to ignite new interest in fencing with his upcoming project, Junho Kim’s Fencing Academy. As the mastermind behind this fresh KBS reality show, Kim will personally train four celebrities—each from different artistic backgrounds—guiding them from the basics of fencing all the way to competing for real medals at an amateur tournament.

A Coach with Purpose

“This is more than just entertainment—my goal is to prove results just like a real athlete,” Kim stated. Displaying unwavering confidence, he promises to do whatever it takes to help his trainees climb the podium. Notably, Kim refers to participants not as ‘cast’ but as ‘athletes,’ emphasizing the seriousness and competitive spirit of his program.

Diverse Cast, One Ambition

The high-profile lineup features Yoonjung Lee (KBS News 9 anchor), singer Nam Yoo-jung, actress Han Jae-in, and EJel, a finalist from Sing Again 3. Their shared challenge? To transform into true fencers under Kim’s direct mentorship, and chase medals in actual competition—a first for all of them.

Speaking on his coaching style, Kim shared, “Drawing from my years as a national athlete and extensive international experience, I want to guide these athletes to success. But even more, I hope the show inspires everyday people in Korea to see fencing as approachable and exciting.”

From Newsroom to Fencing Piste

Yoonjung Lee, currently anchoring KBS Sports 9, is poised for a career twist: “I’m used to reporting news, but this time I’ll be stepping into the arena myself. I look forward to discovering the charm of fencing firsthand and sharing that experience with viewers.” Promos tease unexpected competitiveness and athleticism within the cast, ensuring high drama both on and off the fencing strip.

Kim’s Multifaceted Legacy

Kim has remained closely tied to KBS, having served as a fencing commentator and as a memorable guest on hit show The Return of Superman. In 2024, he took home the top award at the KBS Entertainment Awards and received the Blue Dragon Film Award for his contributions to Korea’s international reputation in fencing.

Junho Kim’s Fencing Academy will premiere in June via Kim’s own YouTube channel, Junho Malgo Junho, and on KBS Sports’ official platforms. The series is expected to combine the thrill of sports competition with the inspiring stories of well-known public figures stepping far outside their comfort zones.
