Netflix’s ‘Dear Hongrang’ Delivers a Powerful Cameo by Lee Kyu-sung
Netflix’s latest historical mystery romance series Dear Hongrang, released on the 16th, has captivated global audiences with its rich storyline and complex characters. Adapted from the best-selling Korean novel Tan-Geum: Swallowing Gold, the drama follows Hongrang (played by Lee Jae-wook), the missing son of Joseon’s wealthiest merchant family, who returns after 12 years with no memory of his past. Only his half-sister Jae-yi (Jo Bo-ah) suspects something is amiss, and as their relationship deepens, a mysterious emotional tension builds.
Among the series’ standout moments is a scene-stealing appearance by actor Lee Kyu-sung as Min Hong-sik. Though a special guest appearance, Lee’s role plays a crucial part in altering the narrative flow, adding depth to the unfolding mystery. His character, raised alongside Hongrang, harbored hidden jealousy due to Hongrang’s favored treatment by adults during childhood.
Lee’s portrayal of Min Hong-sik is as emotionally charged as it is nuanced. He fuels suspicion in Moo-jin (played by Jung Ga-ram) with a pivotal clue that shifts the storyline’s direction. In an intense sequence, Min confronts Hongrang with over-the-top gestures and confrontational words, revealing his long-held resentment. Lee’s strong dialogue delivery and unwavering gaze command viewers’ attention, perfectly capturing his character’s inner complexity.
Despite brief screen time, Lee Kyu-sung brings remarkable gravitas and conviction to his role, navigating his character’s inferiority complex, distrust, and bitterness with masterful precision. His consistent ability to portray varying roles across dramas has made him one of Korea’s most versatile actors. In Dear Hongrang, Lee demonstrates skillful synergy with the main cast, including Lee Jae-wook, Jo Bo-ah, and Jung Ga-ram, further cementing his reputation as a scene-stealer.
Fans and critics alike are praising his performance, with anticipation growing for his future projects. Dear Hongrang is now streaming exclusively on Netflix.
