Netflix Unveils Thriller ‘The Rat’ Starring Ryu Jun-yeol and Sol Kyung-gu
Netflix has officially confirmed the production of its new Korean thriller series ‘The Rat’, unveiling an exciting cast led by acclaimed actors Ryu Jun-yeol and Sol Kyung-gu. The announcement has generated considerable buzz among fans of dark, suspenseful K-content.
Based on a Kakao Webtoon of the same name, inspired by a Korean folklore tale that suggests ‘a rat becomes human when it eats fingernails,’ the series explores the thin line between truth and fabrication. ‘The Rat’ follows the story of Moon-jae, a reclusive novelist, whose life is upended when a mysterious imposter steals his identity, wealth, and even his name. With no way to prove who he is, Moon-jae teams up with No-ja, a merciless loan shark who runs a shady investigation agency, to pursue the imposter and recover his life.
Ryu Jun-yeol takes on the challenging role of Moon-jae, the isolated novelist gripped by anthropophobia, while Sol Kyung-gu portrays No-ja, a character who will do anything for money. This marks the first collaboration between the duo, and expectations are high for the intense chemistry they are expected to deliver.
The series will be directed by Hong-sun Kim, known for his gripping work on Netflix titles such as ‘Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area’ and K-occult drama ‘The Guest’. His ability to build atmospheric tension in genre-heavy stories has made him a fan favorite. Writing the screenplay is Jae-gon Lee, acclaimed for his narrative-focused storytelling in works like ‘Special Affairs Team TEN’ and ‘The Good Family’.
‘The Rat’ promises to deliver a psychologically intense and compelling drama where the boundaries of reality blur in a haunting tale of personal identity, betrayal, and revenge. With Netflix continuing to invest in top-tier Korean content, this new original is poised to appeal to global audiences seeking edgy, character-driven thrillers.
