Netflix to Debut ‘Match-up’, Marking Yoo Ah-in’s Return to the Screen

Netflix to stream Korean film Matchup featuring Yoo Ahin and Lee Byunghun this May

Acclaimed South Korean actor Yoo Ah-in makes his highly anticipated return to the screen in the film ‘Match-up’, premiering globally on Netflix starting May 8. The film originally hit Korean theaters on March 26 and has since garnered over 2.12 million admissions as of May 1, according to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC).

‘Match-up’ tells the compelling story of Cho Hoon-hyun, portrayed by Lee Byung-hun, a legendary Go (baduk) player in South Korea. After being unexpectedly defeated by a younger protégé, Cho reignites his innate competitive drive to reclaim his title at the top. The immersive sports drama dives deep into themes of rivalry, redemption, and legacy, resonating strongly with Korean and international audiences alike.

The film has also made headlines as it marks Yoo Ah-in’s first role following legal issues. Previously embroiled in controversy over alleged drug use, Yoo returns to the public eye through a powerful performance. His appearance alongside Lee Byung-hun not only signifies a professional comeback but also reflects the growing trend of reimagining classic Korean narratives through modern streaming platforms like Netflix.

In addition to its theatrical success—becoming 2025’s second-highest-grossing Korean film next to Hitman 2—‘Match-up’ has earned critical recognition. Both Lee and Yoo have been nominated for Best Actor at the 23rd Directors Cut Awards, hosted by the Directors Guild of Korea. Their strong on-screen chemistry and high-caliber performances further affirm the comeback status of Korea’s seasoned talents.

With Netflix providing worldwide exposure, ‘Match-up’ is set to reach a broader audience, amplifying Korean cinema’s increasingly influential global footprint. This release not only marks a major milestone for the actors but also signals Netflix’s ongoing commitment to investing in high-quality Korean narratives.
