Korean Crime Thriller ‘Hunter with a Scalpel’ Makes Global Splash at Cannes Series

Midform drama Hunter with a Scalpel from LG U+ Studio X+U gains acclaim at Cannes Series Festival

At the prestigious 8th Cannes International Series Festival, LG U+ Studio X+U’s latest midform drama Hunter with a Scalpel captivated an international audience and marked another milestone in the rise of K-content. Known for its dark, gripping narrative, this Korean crime thriller centers on a gifted forensic pathologist named Se-hyun, who stumbles upon a clue about his long-presumed-dead father’s crimes while conducting an autopsy. He takes justice into his own hands, launching a personal manhunt that outpaces the police themselves.

The drama was lauded for its bold storytelling, high emotional density, and a carefully structured plot that blends psychological tension with artful cinematography. As one of the official selections at Cannes Series, it showcased the immense global potential of the Korean ‘K-thriller’ and midform drama genres.

Director Lee Jung-hoon and stars Park Juhyun, Ryu Seungsoo, Choi Kwangje, and Bin Chanuuk made an impressive appearance in France, engaging in photocalls, interviews, the pink carpet, and the official screening. Park Juhyun, in particular, drew major media attention for her deep and expressive performance, with some outlets calling her the ‘next global star’ due to her natural charm and acting versatility.

Media outlets offered in-depth analysis of Park’s character and the psychological intricacy of Se-hyun. Strong ensemble performances by Ryu, Choi, and Bin further elevated the show’s suspense and emotional impact. The official screening drew a standing ovation, underlining the series’ success in engaging audiences emotionally while maintaining genre-specific tension.

Critics praised the series for its tight, character-driven storytelling and its genre-defying evolution. International press especially commended Park Juhyun’s intensity, calling the performance a “quiet but powerful exploration of the human psyche.”

Following last year’s success with Tarot, this marks the second consecutive year LG U+ Studio X+U has been invited to Cannes Series, cementing its leadership in the international midform content market. The studio’s growing portfolio includes hits like 선의의 경쟁, 노 웨이 아웃: 더 룰렛, 하이쿠키, and 밤이 되었습니다, helping redefine how K-content is consumed worldwide.

Hunter with a Scalpel is scheduled for release on June 16 via U+ TV, U+ Mobile TV, and Disney+ globally.
