Kim Hieora Makes Triumphant Return to Stage: ‘Frida’ Musical Unveils First Look
Actress Kim Hieora is making her long-awaited return to the stage following a hiatus prompted by controversy, rejoining the cast of the musical Frida by EMK Musical Company. Scheduled to begin its third season on June 17 at NOL Uniplex in Seoul, the production revealed its first official cast photos, capturing the essence of the visual masterpiece it aims to present.
This genre-bending show musical offers a rich portrayal of the final chapters of legendary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo‘s life. Framed through an artistic lens, Frida celebrates her impassioned resilience and her famous mantra—“VIVA LA VIDA!”—with themes of liberation, individuality, and healing.
The newly released photos reinterpret Frida’s defiant spirit and creative identity through a series of sleek, modern concepts. Each actor brings a unique interpretation to the role, promising an intense, emotionally charged performance. Kim So-hyang, Kim Ji-woo, Kim Hieora, and Jung Yu-ji embody the character of Frida with fierce gazes and bold stances, each highlighting a distinct aspect of the artist’s soul.
Kim So-hyang delivers a dynamic and progressive portrayal, while Kim Ji-woo‘s controlled emotional delivery anticipates a fresh take on Frida’s journey. Kim Hieora stands out with her poised charisma, signaling a powerful return to the stage after previously appearing in the 2022 version. Her re-entry marks her first public performance since resolving past allegations and landing a role in the upcoming film “Savior” directed by Shin Jun.
The cast also includes Jeon Soo-mi, Jang Eun-ah, and Aiki as gender-fluid host ‘Repleha’—symbolizing Frida’s soulmate Diego Rivera—each exuding a magnetic mix of charisma and mystique. The character Destino, played by Lee Areum-sol, Lee Ji-yeon, and Park Sun-young, introduces more ominous undertones, representing death’s constant presence in Frida’s later life. In contrast, Memoria, portrayed by Park Si-in, Heo Yoon-seul, and Yoo Yeon-jung, encapsulates Frida’s innocence and youthful essence with warmth and charm.
Frida is EMK’s first original small-theater musical, following successful large-scale productions like The Man Who Laughs and Beethoven Secret. The creative team—director Choo Jeong-hwa, composer and music director Heo Su-hyun, and choreographer Kim Byeong-jin—has been praised for elevating the standard of intimate musical theater in Korea. The show sold out every performance during its 2022 premiere and maintained critical buzz in its 2023 revival.
The 2025 season combines original cast members with new talents, ensuring an evocative and emotionally explosive experience. Frida will run from June 17 to September 7. Pre-sale tickets open on May 28 for EMK members, with general ticket sales launching on May 29.
