K-pop Group WINNER Returns with Three-Member Concert, MINO Absent Amid Controversy
K-pop boy group WINNER is set to return to the stage in July, marking their first concert in three years and three months. The performance will, however, feature only three of its members: Kang Seung-yoon, Kim Jin-woo, and Lee Seung-hoon—MINO, also known as Song Min-ho, will not be participating due to lingering controversy surrounding his public service duties.
WINNER’s agency, YG Entertainment, confirmed on June 7 that they will proceed with the concert, which also celebrates the group’s official comeback. “As this marks the long-awaited reunion with our fans after three years, we finalized venue arrangements well in advance and have been preparing diligently for a high-quality performance,” the statement read. “Despite internal debate on whether to proceed, the decision to hold the concert reflects both the members’ strong desire to reconnect with fans and our appreciation for their ongoing support.”
MINO, who began his social service duty in March 2023 at a public facility in Seoul’s Mapo District, was discharged in December of that year. However, he came under scrutiny for allegedly neglecting his duties. As public concern grew, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon initiated a city-wide inspection into public service staff compliance. Reports indicated that MINO admitted to being absent during assigned working hours during police investigations.
Since their 2014 debut with the album ‘2014 S/S’, WINNER has become one of K-pop’s prominent male acts. Following their landmark performances ‘The Circle’ in 2022 and year-end show ‘White Holiday’, the group went on an extended hiatus due to mandatory military service. Kim Jin-woo and Lee Seung-hoon completed their service by early 2022, and leader Kang Seung-yoon was discharged last year. MINO, as the last to serve, was expected to rejoin afterwards, but the investigation complicates his return.
With this upcoming concert, WINNER is poised to reconnect with their dedicated fanbase. “This was a difficult decision,” YG Entertainment added, “and we sincerely ask for fans’ warm encouragement and support for the three members participating.”
