Hanil Top Ten Show Reunites Y2K for a Millennium-Era Nostalgia Tour
In a striking nod to the turn of the century, the legendary boy band Y2K reunites after 23 years on MBN’s ‘Hanil Top Ten Show’. Airing Tuesday at 9:50 p.m., this cross-cultural music variety program features top-ranking singers from Korea and Japan who go head-to-head performing iconic Trot, K-pop, and J-pop hits.
This week’s 49th episode presents a ‘Reply 1999’ special, brilliantly spotlighting late 1990s to early 2000s hits. Divided into two teams, ‘Active Singer Team 1’ and ‘Active Singer Team 2’ battle it out by reviving the Millennium Era’s ultimate tracks. Among them, Y2K takes center stage—original members Go Jae-geun, Yuichi, and Koji stepping back into the limelight with their signature long hairstyles that influenced a generation of rockers.
Go Jae-geun explained the bold style, saying, “Back then, all rock bands rocked long hair—even with strict grooming rules.” Japanese member Yuichi recalled the hardship of learning Korean lyrics, admitting, “We shed many tears while practicing ‘After We Parted’. It wasn’t easy.”
The reunion saw Y2K delivering an electrifying performance of their nostalgic hit ‘BAD’, encapsulating the Millennial emotion. Joining the lineup, vocalists Jeon Yu-jin and Shin Seung-tae faced off in a high-note showdown. Jeon, nicknamed the ‘Dolphin of Pohang’, amazed the crowd with ultrasonic vocal exercises. Meanwhile, Shin, highlighting his background in traditional Korean folk songs, revealed an unconventional warm-up technique.
Performing powerful pieces—Jeon with ‘Storm’ by RUMORS and Shin with ‘Bruise’ by Kim Hyun-jung—the two vocalists ignited the stage. Viewers are left wondering who will take the crown for high-note supremacy. Additionally, senior member Enoch caused a stir during the upcoming ‘MZ Challenge’, challenging the age boundaries of the Millennial-Z generation. “The dictionary defines MZ as being born between 1980 and 2010,” he argued, adding drama to the face-off.
Producers shared, “Thanks to Y2K, ‘Hanil Top Ten Show’ transcended national borders and generations, reviving the best of both Korean and Japanese music history.” Stay tuned for this unforgettable celebration of nostalgia and pop culture. Episode 49 of ‘Hanil Top Ten Show’ airs tonight at 9:50 p.m. on MBN.
