Exploring Brunei’s Culinary Delights with ‘Student Abroad Eunamsun’
A Taste of Brunei with Ryu Su-young, Yoon Kyung-ho, and Ki-hyun
Discover the Flavors of Brunei on ‘Student Abroad: Eunamsun’
The popular travel and cooking show, ‘Student Abroad: Eunamsun’, recently aired its 5th episode showcasing the vibrant culinary culture of Brunei. Hosted by the dynamic trio, Ryu Su-young, Yoon Kyung-ho, and Ki-hyun, the show delves deep into Brunei’s local flavors, starting with its versatile sambal seasoning.
The Art of ‘Aga Aga’
In this episode, the audience was introduced to the Bruneian concept of ‘Aga Aga,’ a term synonymous with the love and precision poured into the cooking process. The episode highlighted how sambal, a staple Bruneian condiment, can transform ordinary ingredients into masterpiece dishes.
Ryu Su-young, while learning the intricacies of sambal, enthused, “I can’t believe I made this! My wife will love it!” displaying his affection and joy in cooking for loved ones.
Culinary Adventures on Water
With a hint of humor, Yoon Kyung-ho joked about the Bruneian dress code being ‘bourgeois,’ as he, along with Ryu Su-young and Ki-hyun, boarded a water taxi to their next destination. They were headed to experience Brunei’s unique 14-dish side meal presentation, which Ryu commented resembled a ‘true Korean feast.’
The trio was taken aback when served with ambuyat, a Bruneian staple reminiscent of jelly noodles, which has been a wartime substitute for rice. Yoon, particularly enamored, expressed a desire to create a summer dish themed around it.
Kitchen Trials and Triumphs
Despite initial mishaps, like Yoon’s reminiscence of his failed first recipe attempt in Portugal, the trio persevered. Yoon embarked on making a cold ambuyat rice dish, seeking help from Ryu after an initial setback—the results, golden and chewy, diverging from the restaurant version.
In a similar spirit, Ryu Su-young, while experimenting with a sambal-infused sauce, exclaimed, “It’s burnt!” Yet, with determination, he unveiled a ‘Spicy Mozzarella Chicken Burger,’ described as a ‘culinary masterpiece’ embodying his five years of cooking experience.
Meanwhile, Ki-hyun, dubbed the ‘Dessert Prince,’ drew inspiration from traditional Bruneian desserts to craft ‘Pandan Honey Rice Cake.’ Although the end product closely resembled pancakes, it was well-received by the production team.
Celebrating Success
Despite the comical challenges faced, the team’s ‘day-one abroad recipe’ received high praise, with empty plates as the ultimate testament to their success. Their journey doesn’t end there as the recipes and experiences will be shared in Hyundai Department Store’s Pangyo branch pop-up store from June 21 to June 29, providing fans a chance to taste the delicious dishes showcased.
