Disney+ Unveils Star-Studded Fall Lineup Featuring Jun Ji-hyun and Kang Dong-won
Disney+ is ramping up its investment in Korean content with a robust lineup of original series for the latter half of 2024. At the Disney+ Open House event held on May 23 at The Walt Disney Company Korea headquarters in Seoul’s Gangnam district, the streaming giant unveiled its premium offerings, promising immersive stories and cinematic scale.
Choi Yeon-woo, Head of Local Content at The Walt Disney Company Korea, emphasized Disney+’s commitment to delivering high-quality programming. “Through premium content and diverse storytelling, we aim to offer deeper immersion and expand narrative universes that engage global audiences,” said Choi during the presentation.
One of the main highlights, ‘Polaris’ (Korean title: 북극성), which stars internationally acclaimed actors Jun Ji-hyun and Kang Dong-won, was singled out as a tentpole title for the second half of 2024. The series is positioned as a flagship project expected to draw both domestic and global viewers.
Other original productions joining the lineup include ‘Nine Puzzle’, ‘Made in Korea’, ‘Fine: The Bumpkins’, ‘Turbulent Current’, and ‘Fragmented City’—each bringing diverse genres and narratives to further solidify Disney+’s standing in the streaming wars.
Of particular note is the upcoming original series ‘Made in Korea’, set in the turbulent 1970s. The show follows the tale of Baek Gi-tae, a man driven by ambition for wealth and power, and prosecutor Jang Geon-young, who risks everything to stop him. As a spin-off of the 2018 Korean film ‘Drug King’, the series dives into a politically and socially intense period of Korean history. The cast features top-tier actors including Hyun Bin, Jung Woo-sung, Won Ji-an, Seo Eun-soo, Jo Yeo-jeong, and Jung Sung-il.
Another fan-favorite returning is ‘Killers’ Shopping Mall Season 2′. The stylish, new-wave action thriller continues the story of Jian, who after securing a dangerous inheritance from her uncle Jin-man, becomes the target of mysterious hitmen once again. Lee Dong-wook, Kim Hye-jun, and Jo Han-sun will reprise their roles in the series, which is slated for release in 2026.
With a strategic mix of historical, action, noir, and thriller genres, Disney+ is clearly positioning Korea as a key content hub for global audiences. As local storytelling gains international traction, the platform seeks to captivate viewers across borders through quality and creativity rooted in Korean culture.
