Choi Dae-hoon, Breakout Star from Netflix K-Drama, Shines in First Variety Show Appearance

South Korean actor Choi Dae-hoon made his first appearance on a variety show, joining host Yoo Jae-suk on the popular tvN program You Quiz on the Block. Known for his breakout role as Boo Sang-gil (aka “Hak-ssi Ajeossi”) in Netflix’s hit original series Poksak Sogasuda, Choi charmed viewers with his candid personality and humble reflections.

“This is my first variety show appearance, and I’m really nervous,” he shared openly. “These days, more people recognize me and even approach me calling out ‘Hak-ssi!’ It’s overwhelming and I’m grateful.”

Choi joked about his nerves before the show, playfully echoing a line from his co-star’s character: “I wasn’t nervous before arriving here, but now I’m like, ‘I love it, I love it so much.’ My face feels like it’s burning.”

Host Yoo Jae-suk, noticing the actor’s high school alma mater, asked, “Did you go to Yongmun High?” to which Choi replied yes, highlighting their shared school roots. The light-hearted banter continued as Yoo mentioned hearing about recent advertising offers coming Choi’s way. Remaining cautious, Choi responded, “I don’t want to jump the gun. If something solid materializes, I’ll gladly share. My project offers have doubled in a short time.”

Choi also offered glimpses into his family’s reaction to his newfound fame. “My wife always sends me new articles, memes, or Shorts even when we’re sitting right next to each other,” he laughed. “She recently said she felt sorry we didn’t get this recognition earlier.”

He recounted a moment with his 10-year-old daughter: “She keeps singing the ‘Hak-ssi remix’ while doing homework. If I look at her, she shoots back with, ‘What are you looking at?’ It’s hilarious.”

When asked whether he’s more like Boo Sang-gil or Yang Kwansik (another notable role of his), Choi smiled and said, “My wife says I’m definitely a Kwansik.” He also shared concerns about portraying both the younger and older versions of Boo Sang-gil. “I was worried that it would look like a young guy pretending to be an old man. That fear stayed with me throughout the shoot.”

With rising fame and growing family pride, Choi Dae-hoon stands poised for a bright future both onscreen and off.
