Actor Lee Hee-jun Returns as Director with ‘Rectangle, Triangle’ at the Jeonju International Film Festival
Veteran Korean actor Lee Hee-jun steps once again behind the camera, bringing his second directorial feature Rectangle, Triangle to international audiences as it debuts in the Korean Cinema section at the 26th Jeonju International Film Festival.
Expanding on the sensibilities showcased in his 2018 autobiographical short film Byeong-hoon’s Day, Lee not only directed but also wrote the screenplay for Rectangle, Triangle. The film offers a sharp yet humorous look into the delicate nature of familial relationships. Set in a confined villa space, the movie captures a family’s gathering that gradually devolves into a reckoning of long-buried tensions.
The Jeonju International Film Festival described the film as “a witty yet piercing exploration of family dynamics.” The festival praised Lee’s direction for extracting powerful performances under spatial limitations, emphasizing, “Despite the claustrophobic setting where characters are mostly seated, Lee displays an extraordinary ability to convey emotional depth.”
Further highlighting his versatility, Lee also appears as an actor in director Go Bong-soo’s new film, Gyul-Le-Gyul-Le. This work delicately navigates the complexity of human relationships, blending humor with tender undertones.
Lee Hee-jun will attend the opening ceremony and engage with audiences through a ‘Guest Visit’ (GV) session and other events, revealing behind-the-scenes stories from both films.
With Lee taking on dual roles as director and actor, both Rectangle, Triangle and Gyul-Le-Gyul-Le are poised to be highlights of this year’s festival. The 26th Jeonju International Film Festival will take place from April 30 to May 9 across various locations in Jeonju City, including the Jeonju Film Street.
