A Forbidden Touch and Supernatural Showdown: SBS Drama ‘귀궁’ Intensifies Romance and Danger

Romantic sparks and ghostly threat clash in SBS Kdrama Gwigung as characters reach emotional crossroads

The latest episode of the SBS weekend drama 귀궁 (Episode 5), aired on June 2nd, delivered emotional intensity packed with both romantic tension and supernatural conflict. As the chemistry between Yeori (portrayed by Kim Ji-yeon) and Gangcheol (portrayed by 육성재) reached a new level, viewers were left captivated by the pair’s evolving relationship.

This episode focused on Yeori trying to suppress her growing feelings after a surprising physical moment with Gangcheol. Although both characters were momentarily exiled from the palace by command of Queen Consort Park (played by Han So-eun), they soon returned, only to find themselves facing the eerie and dangerous creature known as ‘팔척귀.’

King Leejeong (played by Kim Ji-hoon) objected to the Queen Consort’s decisions, calling them against royal protocol. However, the queen was driven by emotion, pleading with tears that no more lives be lost, softening the king’s stance.

In an intimate moment, Gangcheol accidentally spilled a mystical medicinal mixture given by Yeonggeum (portrayed by Cha Cheong-hwa), made from cow brain and snake tail. Yeori instinctively wiped the potion from Gangcheol’s body, creating an intense moment charged with romantic tension. Flustered, Gangcheol backed away, drawing a firm emotional line by firmly saying, “Don’t come within ten steps of me.”

Unable to process his stirring emotions, Gangcheol lamented to himself outside the palace. “Why does this keep happening? Whenever I’m near her, something stirs. I feel like I want to devour everything around me,” he confessed.

Simultaneously, Yeori recalled their earlier moment inside the flower palanquin, trying to make sense of her confusion. “Why am I feeling this way? It’s because I’m confused… Yes, maybe it’s just because of Lord Yoon Gap,” she muttered, struggling to rationalize her emotions.

Tensions escalated as Gangcheol and Yeori performed a ritual, aligned with the sacred ‘Byeong-o-il’ hour, to seal away the eight-foot ghost. Despite using luminous beads known as ‘야광주’ in the ceremony, following the warning of monk Gaseop about the spell’s temporal limit, their efforts were in vain. The nightmarish spirit broke through talismans and reappeared, heightening the stakes for our protagonists.

As the emotional and supernatural elements intertwine deeper, 귀궁 continues to grip audiences with its rich storytelling, complex character arcs, and atmospheric mysticism. The love story between Yeori and Gangcheol now burns with unresolved passion, set against a backdrop of otherworldly threats.
