Yook Sungjae Shines in SBS Fantasy Drama ‘Gwigung’

SBS fantasy period drama Gwigung reaches double digit ratings as Yook Sungjaes performance impresses

Seoul, South Korea – Emerging as a weekend TV powerhouse, SBS’s latest fantasy period drama ‘Gwigung’ has captivated audiences nationwide, proving once again the enduring appeal of Yook Sungjae in supernatural storytelling.

Airing on Fridays and Saturdays via Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS), ‘Gwigung’ follows the fantastical tale of Yeorae, a spiritual shaman resisting her fate, and her encounter with Kang Cheol, an ancient serpent deity trapped in the body of her first love, Yoon Gap. Blending spiritual folklore, palace intrigue, and body-switching chaos, the show soars with a unique “soul battle” fantasy-romance narrative.

Since its premiere, ‘Gwigung’ has been climbing the ratings ladder. According to Nielsen Korea, the show reached 11.4% in episode 9, making it the No.1 mini-series of the week and affirming its status as a breakout hit for SBS in 2025.

At the heart of this success is Yook Sungjae, who plays dual roles: the possessed official Yoon Gap and the mischievous deity Kang Cheol. Known for his standout performances in previous fantasy series like ‘Goblin’, ‘The Golden Spoon’, and ‘Mystic Pop-up Bar’, Yook once again proves his versatility and emotional range.

Early episodes showcased his comedic timing as Kang Cheol awkwardly adjusts to human life, bringing light-hearted chaos to the Joseon-era palace. As the story develops, Yook delivers an increasingly nuanced performance, portraying Kang Cheol’s transformation as he absorbs human emotions and complex relationships.

From calling storms to battling ghostly spirits with a saber in hand, the drama leans heavily into its fantasy roots—and Yook navigates each magical scene with ease and charisma. His impressive action and emotional depth add rich layers to the show’s supernatural choreography.

Fans have especially praised the blossoming romance between Yook’s character and Yeorae (played by Kim Ji-yeon). In episode 10, a fantastical scene where Kang Cheol uses divine power to bloom a path of flowers for Yeorae left audiences swooning, with many claiming, “An Imoogi is now my dream guy.”

With the series now entering its second act, viewers eagerly await the final confrontation between Kang Cheol and the vengeful spirit Palchukgui—the antagonist with a vendetta against the royal family—and the fate of Yeorae’s divine love. Can an ancient deity find peace—and love—in a borrowed mortal form? Yook Sungjae’s performance may just provide the answer.

‘Gwigung’ airs its 11th episode on Friday, February 23rd at 10 PM KST on SBS.
