South Korean actress Hayunsoo made waves on June 22 after she shared her admiration for veteran actress Lee Young-ae’s performance in the stage play ‘Hedda Gabler’. Taking to social media, Hayunsoo posted a selfie with the caption, “A solo trip to Magok to see the play.”

She commented further, “I didn’t bring my glasses but I had a front-row seat, so I could see clearly! What a powerful 155 minutes,” praising the energy of the performance. She also shared a snapshot of Lee Young-ae during the curtain call, highlighting the depth of her portrayal.

‘Hedda Gabler’ opened on June 7 at the LG Arts Center Seoul’s LG SIGNATURE Hall in celebration of the venue’s 25th anniversary. The production stars Lee Young-ae alongside a strong ensemble cast of seven actors. Notably, the cast will perform under a ‘one-cast’ format through June 8, ensuring consistent performances for all audiences.

The play explores the story of Hedda, a beautiful and bold woman trapped in a mundane marriage with academic George Tesman. As the monotony sets in, Hedda’s past resurfaces when her former lover, a troubled but brilliant writer named Ejlert, makes a triumphant return. Things unravel further with the reappearance of Thea, a fellow alumna she once dismissed, and Judge Brack, who subtly manipulates Hedda’s every move. These complex dynamics push Hedda’s life into an unanticipated spiral.

Reflective of its themes of inner turmoil and resistance to societal norms, the production has resonated profoundly with audiences seeking compelling and emotionally intelligent theater.

Celebrated for its gripping narrative and powerhouse performances, ‘Hedda Gabler’ is currently a cultural highlight in Seoul’s vibrant performing arts scene.
