MONSTA X’s Shownu and Joohoney Embark on a Culinary Journey Through Istanbul

MONSTA X members Shownu and Joohoney explore Istanbul in search of authentic food culture on KBS2

MONSTA X members Shownu and Joohoney have captured viewers’ hearts once again, this time by diving deep into the rich culinary and cultural heritage of Istanbul, Turkey, on the latest episode of KBS2’s variety program.

In the episode aired on the 16th, the duo, alongside renowned chef Lee Yeon-bok, formed the team ‘Boksta X’ and continued their journey from the modern cityscape into the historic old town of Istanbul. Their first stop: a charming local café where they encountered kaymak, a traditional Turkish dairy delicacy made from clotted cream.

Treated like honored guests, Shownu and Joohoney received a serving of kaymak topped generously with natural honey—a gesture of Turkish hospitality. Their enthusiastic reaction to the creamy, sweet flavor sparked a lively “mukbang” segment that left audiences virtually tasting the authenticity through their screens.

The journey continued with a taste of kazandibi, a caramelized rice pudding often dubbed “the dessert of kings”. Their expressions of delight only intensified when they arrived at the famed Egyptian Bazaar, known for its explosion of spices and authentic ingredients.

Among the food highlights was the indulgent künefe: finely shredded phyllo dough grilled to a golden crisp, layered with oozing cheese, and drenched in syrup and crushed pistachios. Both Shownu and Joohoney were visibly awestruck by the melt-in-your-mouth contrast of textures and sweet-savory flavor profile.

Their Turkish adventure escalated with a visit to a traditional coffeehouse nestled within the bazaar. There, the members watched the brewing process of Turkish coffee heated in sand. Shownu even took a shot at making coffee himself, receiving praise for his adept technique. The café ambiance then shifted from culinary to musical, as local musicians started performing.

Joohoney got swept up in the rhythms, joining the band as a drummer, much to the delight of everyone in the café. The episode closed with the heartwarming image of ‘Boksta X’ and the musicians posing together for a commemorative photo.

This culturally immersive episode not only brought Turkish cuisine and traditions to light but also showcased the warm chemistry and adventurous spirits of Shownu and Joohoney. Viewers are already looking forward to what fusion dish the group will create with Chef Lee Yeon-bok in the upcoming episodes.

Meanwhile, MONSTA X recently celebrated their 10th debut anniversary with a special digital album, ‘NOW PROJECT vol.1’, featuring re-recorded versions of their past hits. Slated for July 18–20, their highly anticipated concert series, ‘2025 MONSTA X Connect X’, promises to reunite the full group with fans worldwide.
