Han So-hee and Jeon Jong-seo’s ‘Project Y’ to Launch Simultaneously in Korea and Japan
In a groundbreaking partnership aiming to bridge cultural gaps, Plus M Entertainment has signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Japan’s telecom giant KDDI Corporation. This alliance aims to accelerate Korean cinema’s entry into the Japanese market with simultaneous theatrical releases and joint marketing initiatives.
The highlight of the collaboration will be the upcoming film ‘Project Y’, starring rising Korean actresses Han So-hee and Jeon Jong-seo. The movie is set to premiere on the same day in both South Korea and Japan — a significant shift from the traditional release schedule that often saw Korean films debuting in Japan six months to a year after their domestic launch.
The partnership covers several collaborative efforts:
- Simultaneous Korea-Japan theatrical releases with coordinated marketing campaigns
- Co-hosting of the ‘Plus M x KDDI Korea-Japan Remaster Screening Event’
- Joint development of intellectual property (IP) and remakes
- Exchange programs for professionals in the content creation sector
Japan’s film distributors typically plan their annual release calendar well in advance, in stark contrast to countries like Taiwan, Vietnam, and Indonesia, where Korean films often debut concurrently with their Korean release dates. This new agreement aims to change that, reflecting the increasing demand for real-time global cultural consumption.
Alongside ‘Project Y,’ the first film to benefit from this initiative is directorial work ‘Night Flower’ by acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Uchida Eiji. The joint efforts aim to strengthen cross-cultural cinematic ties and solidify Plus M Entertainment’s position as a global content powerhouse.
With this milestone agreement, Plus M and KDDI are paving the way for future collaborations, giving Korean films wider access to international audiences and reinforcing the global appeal of Korean storytelling.
