Netflix Unveils Noir Action Thriller ‘Square’ Featuring Heo Jun-ho and Rising Stars

Upcoming Netflix series Square features Heo Jun-ho Chu Young-woo in a noir action thriller

‘Square’, an upcoming Netflix original, is a gritty noir-action thriller where vengeance, power struggles, and family legacies intertwine. The series follows ‘Nam Gi-jun’, who returns to the dark world of ‘Square’ 11 years after severing ties with the organization, driven by the mysterious death of his brother, ‘Nam Ki-seok’, formerly the group’s second-in-command.

The crime world in Square is dominated by two rival groups: Juun and Bongsan. Netflix has unveiled striking stills that delve into the inner dynamics of Juun, revealing tales of loyalty and betrayal. At the heart stands ‘Lee Ju-un’ (played by legendary actor Heo Jun-ho), the stoic leader of the Juun faction, seen during Ki-seok’s funeral. As Ki-seok was like a son to him and the group’s heir apparent, the fallout from his death pulls viewers deep into the turmoil of leadership and revenge.

Heo Jun-ho, known for commanding performances in Kingdom, My Name, and Mogadishu, brings fierce presence and nuanced charisma to Lee Ju-un, amplifying the emotional gravity of the role.

Also attending the funeral is ‘Lee Geum-son’ (Chu Young-woo), Ju-un’s son who chose a path outside the crime world. As a public prosecutor with ambition, Geum-son represents a generational shift. Chu Young-woo, recently praised for award-winning performances in Intensive Care Unit and The Tale of Ok-nyeo, showcases a colder and more intellectual side in this role, marking a significant evolution in his career.

Beside them is ‘Choi Sung-cheol’ (Jo Han-chul), Ju-un’s most trusted right-hand man. Having brought complex depth in roles across Gyeongseong Creature, The Spring of Youth, and Logiwan, Jo delivers a stabilizing force in a world spinning into chaos. As conflict escalates, Sung-cheol takes calculated risks to maintain structural control within Ju-un.

Meanwhile, the visceral impact of Nam Ki-seok’s death—played by Lee Jun-hyeok—lingers in the story. Though he built Juun into a corporate empire after Gi-jun’s desertion, he becomes the fuse that lights the explosive intrigue after his assassination. Known for diverse performances in titles like My Perfect Secretary and Good or Bad Dong-jae, Lee brings delicate balance to a role crucial to the narrative’s emotional stakes.

With a constellation of trusted veterans and breakout performances, Square promises to immerse global viewers in a tension-filled world without mercy or compromise. Set to premiere June 6 at 4 PM (KST) exclusively on Netflix, this series could mark one of the most compelling Korean noir sagas of the year.
