KDrama Star Hwang Jung-eum Raises Health Concerns Over Father’s Glaucoma Diagnosis

Korean actress Hwang Jung eum expresses concern over her fathers worsening eye health on I Like Solo

On the latest episode of I Like Solo, which aired on June 13 via SBS Plus and E Channel, acclaimed actress Hwang Jung-eum shared an emotional moment with her father while visiting an ophthalmology clinic in Seoul.

Her father, who currently resides on Jeju Island, had been dealing with increasing vision discomfort, prompting regular check-ups. Hwang revealed, “My dad has had trouble with his eyes lately and needs constant monitoring. He even underwent eye surgery alone without telling me, perhaps to keep me from worrying. I only found out after the procedure was done.”

During the consultation, the specialist issued a concerning update. “The left eye is significantly compromised — the optic nerve functions at less than 20 percent,” he explained, confirming that her father is in the end stage of glaucoma. Furthermore, the doctor stressed, “If one eye is affected, it’s highly likely the other eye may develop glaucoma too. If left untreated, it can lead to blindness.”

The episode took a more personal turn when Hwang added, “After giving birth, my own eyesight deteriorated.” The doctor responded with a chilling fact: “Glaucoma is highly hereditary. If a family member has it, your risk is four to nine times higher than average.” Though not an immediate emergency, the doctor urged Hwang to undergo preventive screenings, which left the star visibly shaken.

This honest and vulnerable snapshot of Hwang Jung-eum’s personal life resonated with viewers, shining a light on the importance of family health and genetic risk awareness — especially in the spotlight of celebrity life.
