Korean Supernatural Rom-Com Leads Weekly Streaming Charts

Gwigung dominates weekly streaming charts with mystical romance and horror twist

The Korean entertainment world has once again proven its global appeal with the latest hit series ‘Gwigung’ (귀궁), topping the weekly content rankings. This supernatural romantic fantasy drama, aired by Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS), captures viewers with the story of Yeori, a shaman who rejects her predestined role, and Kang Chul, an ancient serpent spirit trapped in the body of her first love Yoon Gap. Together, they face off against Palcheokgui, a vengeful ghost tied to the royal family.

With a refreshing blend of horror and humor, ‘Gwigung’ has captivated audiences from its debut. Episode 7 broke its own record with a peak viewership rating of 10.9%, and it currently holds the No.1 spot on Netflix Korea’s “Top 10 Series Today”.

Coming in at No. 2 is the action-packed crime film ‘Yadang’ (야당), which follows the entangled ambitions of a drug broker, a prosecutor aiming for political power, and a relentless detective, each driven by different motives. Starring Kang Ha-neul, Yoo Hae-jin, and Park Hae-joon, ‘Yadang’ is drawing near to 3 million admissions since its release on April 16 and remains a box office leader for the fourth consecutive week.

At No. 3 is ‘More Beautiful Than Heaven’ (천국보다 아름다운), a touching romantic drama from Joongang Tongyang Broadcasting Company (JTBC). The story follows Haesook, who wakes up in heaven as an 80-year-old and reunites with her rejuvenated husband, Nakjoon. Set in a richly imagined afterlife, the show blends philosophical themes with emotional storytelling, supported by a powerhouse cast including Kim Hye-ja, Son Suk-ku, Han Ji-min, and Lee Jung-eun. The drama recently hit its ratings peak with 6.9% nationwide and 7.6% in the capital region.

No. 4 is the gritty action drama ‘Pakwa’ (파과), featuring legendary assassin Jogak and his mysterious nemesis Tuwoo, whose decades-long chase comes to a dramatic climax. Directed by Min Kyoo-dong and starring Lee Hye-young and Kim Sung-cheol, ‘Pakwa’ is in its second week and continues to top the Korean box office among homegrown releases.

Rounding out the top 5 is ‘Someday Wise Resident Life’ (언젠가는 슬기로울 전공의생활) from Television Network (tvN), a heartwarming spin-off of the beloved ‘Hospital Playlist’ series. The drama follows a group of rookie residents finding their footing in the medical world, navigating stress, self-doubt, and the camaraderie of their journey. The 10th episode pulled in a peak rating of 9.2%, securing No.1 among cable and secondary broadcasters in its timeslot.

Additional chart-toppers include the international thriller ‘Conclave’, the supernatural action flick ‘The Holy Night: Demon Hunters’, Netflix series ‘Bokssoak Sokkassuda’, Channel A’s romantic reality show ‘Heart Pairing’, and Netflix’s hit drama ‘Weak Hero Class 2’.
